Emilia Clarke Has Some Diplomatic Thoughts About What Happened With The Cancelled Game Of Thrones Prequel

Disappointing news has once again hit the Game of Thrones news cycle, as HBO passed on its previous prequel series that was said to be based on the Age of Heroes in Westeros. Fortunately, that news was somewhat negated by the series order of one of the other spinoff ideas, though some fans may be wondering why HBO passed on the original prequel series they had a pilot for and went straight to series with another.

Emilia Clarke doesn’t have the answers, though the former Mother of Dragons did have a rather diplomatic response and some thoughts about why things went south on the prequel HBO passed on.

Emilia Clarke is just giving her best guess, which is also some solid common sense as well. If the first shot at a prequel was crushing it and looked like it was going to be the next big thing on television, HBO wouldn’t have passed on it. Clearly there was valid reason to be concerned about this new project, which is why the network shifted gears and decided to go with House of the Dragon.

Emilia Clarke’s mention to ET that HBO could eventually come back to the prequel makes sense considering Game of Thrones got off to an odd start as well. The pilot was shot, but then nearly completely re-shot later after some heavy changes to the script and some re-castings. Obviously, Game of Thrones went on to be a massive success despite that misstep, so it isn’t crazy for Emilia Clarke or anyone to think that HBO passing on this project means initial prequel is gone forever.

There have been rumors about why the Game of Thrones prequel failed, with budgets running over, personnel problems, and creative differences all being mentioned. The prequel pilot did apparently get an initial viewing by HBO executives over the summer, who then wanted showrunner Jane Goldman to fix some issues. Obviously, those issues may not have been fixed, or we could’ve been living in a world where two major Game of Thrones projects were in the works. Probably not, though, as one Game of Thrones show can be expensive enough.

House of the Dragon, the new Game of Thrones spinoff, is in the works at HBO. Stick with CinemaBlend for more updates on its development and for other things happening in the world of television and movies towards the end of 2019.
